When I was serving our nation in uniform, 25 years ago, I thought about my future; it included an active and adventure-filled retirement with my family and friends. While I loved serving the Army and supporting my country, I was also looking toward retirement options offered in the military, which were minimal at the time.
Today, our service members can look toward retirement with more financial confidence. I’m pleased that by January 2018, approximately 85 percent of service men and women will be able to receive government benefits when they choose to retire, as opposed to the 19 percent today. The new Blended Retirement System, or BRS, is one of the most wide-reaching and significant changes to military pay and benefits in the last 70 years. These changes will take effect in January 2018, and eligibility will vary based on when service members join the military.
Even if retirement is still on the distant horizon, BRS merits careful consideration. The earlier we start to save, the more we can harness the power of compound interest and secure a sound financial future. Planning now can help make your retirement dreams a reality.
